Sorry, lastly, since you are willing to wait, it seems appropriate to stick it out to the year-or-so mark, to see G3 and GPS. It sounds like 2.0 will be here by then, and should bring many hardware and software features to boot.

I just got the iPhone in the past month or so (late February '08). It is exceptional. I needed a smart phone for side work. There were a number of great deals for Palm Treos or other similar non-RIM phones that would have put up to $150 in my pocket for getting a 2-year contract. But I received a Mac a couple of years back (still use W2K at work) and I am so impressed by Apple that I wanted to at least try the iPhone. Wow! They did a great job on the aesthetics, user interface, and features. It was worth it to give up the $150 and the additional $400 for the great phone/PDA/email/browser/etc. It is very nice indeed. I think you would have been more than satisfied with the additional productivity (being a web designer on the side) having the ability for clients to contact you without using government assets is nice (since you and I are both government webmasters by day and daring web designers by night).
